Mark and Ten Leave SM Entertainment - What's next for NCT?
In almost back to back announcements, Mark and Ten, known for their participation in NCT and WayV, announced they would be leaving SM Entertainment due to ending their exclusive contracts. Many fans are wondering what this means for each member, plus the groups going forward. We hope we can help clear up some questions in this article on what the future holds for the members.

Mark
Mark has been with SM Entertainment for over 10 years, with his official debut being in 2016 with NCT. Previous to this, he was known by fans through his appearances in SM Rookie activities. Mark continued to be a key member of NCT throughout the years, featuring as a main rapper in NCT, NCT 127 and NCT Dream, a group in which he was also the leader.
To say his absence will be noticed is an understatement. Mark is a pivotal and representative member of NCT, and a member that fans were sure would be there to stay. However, it does not appear Mark is leaving the group on bad terms with the members, in his personal statement, he says:
"We were on the same boat together and sailed the best voyage over these past 10-plus years, and now that someone like me, who always loved going into the water, is saying I want to swim on my own, they are supporting my deep dive with love. I will also continue to support and love them always."
Although Mark is leaving SM Entertainment, does this also mean he will be permanently leaving the group? It appears so. He continues:
"I will live the rest of my life with a grateful heart toward SM, the NCT members, and Czennie. When I greet you again in the future in a new form, I will work as hard as I possibly can so that I can be a better Mark in front of you. Once again, thank you so very much."
As things stand, it appears that Mark will no longer participate in any activities with NCT, NCT 127 or NCT Dream. He does not appear to have signed to a new label as of yet, and while he hints at wanting to continue with music, his current future plans are unclear.
Ten
3 days after Mark's announcement, Ten announce he too would be leaving SM Entertainment, ending 13 years at the company. Ten debuted through NCT, and was in NCT U, and later a main member of the Chinese sub-unit of NCT, WayV. He was also part of SuperM, a collab group with other artists at SM Entertainment, including Mark.
Ten, through a personal statement, said:
"As I approach my 10th anniversary, I've found myself wanting to take on new challenges, explore new possibilities, and discover new versions of myself. So, after a lot of thought and many heartfelt discussions with the members and the staff at SM, I've decided to conclude my exclusive contract with the company."
However, this isn't the end for Ten and his participation with NCT. Although he has left the company, he will continue to participate in NCT and WayV activities "where possible", according to SM Entertainment.
There seems to be more information regarding Ten's future than Mark, with him stating he hopes to continue as a solo artist while also participating in NCT and WayV activities.
NCT - What's Next?
So far, NCT as a whole has lost 5 members, those being:
- Taeil
- Mark
- Lucas
- Shotaro
- Sungchan
While Mark, Shotaro and Sungchan have left on amicable terms, Taeil and Lucas left the group due to their individual controversies. NCT has had to deal with the fallout of these, particularly the shock of Taeil's actions, which has had a huge impact on the group itself.
Going forward, NCT 127 will appear at KCON later this year, and all NCT groups will continue with their activities. When and what they will do is unclear, but we will have to wait and see.
