IOI 'Suddenly' Climbs to 4 on the Korean Music Charts – Why Reunions Can Work

IOI are back for the first time since their disbandment in January 2017, and more than 10 years after their formation through the show Produce 101. 2 members down from their original line-up, many were sceptical on how the group's comeback would perform, but any doubts have been squashed after this week's chart results.
IOI's newest comeback Suddenly was received well, however, as their promotions have continued, and fans have watched their stages together, hype around the song and group have increased, causing the group to reach the top 10 of the Melon Charts, at their highest reaching number 3 in the charts.
Fans and non-fans are rediscovering the group, with many noting that some members have not had a music comeback since their IOI days, such as Nayoung, who transitioned into modelling and acting after the groups disbandment. Some members, such as Chaeyeon, have noted that this could be their last idol-based activity, as their subsequent groups after IOI have also disbanded.
The comeback also brings a sense of nostalgia to many listeners, not only by the style of song, but also due to the group. The comeback evokes memories for many of their high school days when they first discovered the group. Due to this, the song has continued to grow in popularity.
IOI's comeback brings up the debate on group reunions and if they are wanted or successful. IOI's comeback proves a group can reunite to major success and reignited interest in the group, and by the looks of how the comeback has been received, many hope the group will continue to promote together past this comeback.
Companies may not realise the popularity their groups have had until a reunion such as IOI's. Going forward, we will be sure to see more of this happening as companies start to realise how profitable this can be. Fans will soon see the comeback of group WANNA ONE, who also debuted through the Produce 101 format.
